A Lesson in Finding the Strength Within
Eric’s Profound Piano Performance
I had the great pleasure of going to my friend Eric’s piano recital last Sunday, October 28, 2018 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I was very moved by his piano playing performance, and more so by what he said about each piece he played. Besides being a talented pianist, he is also a very eloquent, thoughtful and captivating speaker. He shared many intimate details about what piano has been in his life from his childhood growing up in the church, up to now. He openly talked about deep feelings of anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, loneliness, sexuality, struggles with family and relationships — all things that I think many of us face nowadays, but might keep to ourselves. I admire Eric’s courage for sharing so much of himself because I think it is empowering — to know all that he’s been through, and nevertheless he finds the strength to persevere. What most resonated with me was what he said towards the end of his performance — that now piano is his way of expressing his true self. I believe that we all need an outlet to express our true creative selves. I also felt very inspired to continue pursuing my own creative pursuits in writing.
